CtEB Competition

E-mail Print PDF

As you all now know, transporting home brew outside of your home can be considered breaking the law. Most if not all competitions state wide are being shut down while we await a verbiage change to the existing laws. Until that time club competitions will also go to the wayside. I had some good ones planned too darn it! None the less our efforts will not go unnoticed! Since we have received so many prizes for this competition Chad and I have discussed the best way to give them to the club. No judging usually means no awards, but not for the CtEB! Everyone who signed up, brews, and turns in the Fermentation Log will get a prize. So what do you need to do?

1. Be signed up for the CtEB competition.

2. Brew a beer with chosen yeast, it really doesn't matter now what is brewed.
3. Fill out Fermentation log that was handed out when you signed up.
4. Turn in Fermentation log at an upcoming meeting. ( We will accept Fermentation Logs from the July meeting until the Aug. meeting)

That's it! Prizes range from gift certificates to bottle openers. Chad an I will be going over the best way to make sure everyone gets some good stuff and to keep the prizes fair. Most brewers will see a small "prize pack" with multiple items.

So while I am sad to see this competition not happening, I am happy to see the prizes put to good use.

Disclaimer: I will hold prize packs until the Aug 16th meeting because that was the original date for these beers to be done. If you have not turned in a fermentation log by Aug 16th you will not be eligible for a prize pack. All prizes left over after Aug. 16th will be donated to the club as prizes for future events.

Hop Experiment

E-mail Print PDF

Hi all,

I had this great idea, a hop experiment, I was like a shark hunter, contacting hop farms for a donation that would allow some of the membership the enjoy making a beer solely out of one hop. Any style, your recipe but just one type of hop to showcase what that hop was capable of. Hops Direct answered my call.
http://www.hopsdirect.com/

I was sent 5 lbs of Willamette hops about a week or so ago ago and Chad and I started talking about the best way to get this experiment underway. The first problem came up, you can't take home brew outside of the home! That pretty much killed any and all of our plans for a club experiment but in the fashion of experimentation we decided that we would go ahead and hand out the hops and let you the brewers do what you will with them.

So at the July meeting Chad and I, scales in hand, will hand out 4 oz of hops to the first 20 people to come and get them. There will be no place holding via the ichat nor will getting to the meeting early do you any good. We will set up shop, let the board go through the business section of the meeting and at break time you can come and grab your hops, until they run out that is.

Willamette Leaf Hops

Cheers to English Beers

E-mail Print PDF

Who: The PDX Brewers Club membership
What: Club Only Competition
When: Competition to start June 21st and conclude with handing out of awards mid to late August
Where: TBD

Link to the sponsors of this event.

This is a club only competition based on the recent CBB competition here in the Portland area. We wanted to take this idea and make it into a club competition. The premise is the same as CBB. A yeast strain is announced and the participants each get a vial of the chosen yeast, along with some vague guidelines to follow and beer categories they can chose from. They are then asked to brew a beer with said yeast and adhere to the guidelines for their declared category/subcategory. Pretty simple.

The hope is that at the June meeting all members who would like to enter this will get a vial of the chosen yeast to take home and brew with. The recipes are your own and there are no rules for what you can or can’t add to the recipe, as long as it meets the style guidelines for that beer. Beers will be brought to the TBD judging spot on a selected day for scoring by a panel of judges while the rest of the club can taste and select the People’s Choice winner. Awards will be handed out after the judges have concluded their tasting and scoring.

Hopefully this can become a yearly event where the winner chooses the next yeast strain and styles we brew next year, but that is for later. For now, lets Cheers to English Beers!
